What to expect from online counselling or hypnotherapy

Let’s take a look at how Hypnotherapy and Counselling works via Zoom. Zoom is a secure video conferencing tool that we can use to chat and see each other online. Just like with being in person, you will need to find a private space to have a conversation.

What equipment do you need?
You will need to use a laptop, computer, or tablet if possible. (You may need to make sure that your device’s microphone and camera are working). Stabilise your device on a flat surface rather than holding it, for minimal disruption or distraction. Your hypnotherapist or counsellor will have emailed you a Zoom link that will enable you to join the session.
When you click the link to join the video session, you and your therapist are both connected. You’ll spend a few minutes checking the camera position is ok. You’ll check that you can both see and hear each other.
What if the Signal drops?
Your therapist will discuss how the hypnotherapy or counselling session is going to work. Your therapist should also ensure you know what to do if the connection is interrupted. However, be reassured that the quality of video conferencing has improved since the days of fuzzy screens and crackly audio.
Talking Helps
Online Counselling and hypnotherapy uses psychotherapy, (or talking therapies), the same as if we were both in the same room. Telephone counselling and hypnotherapy is available for those that prefer it. We can still work together and get the same end result as if we were physically present.
Zoom Video Technology
In these past few years we have all had to make adjustments to how we interact with each other. ‘Zoom’ video conferencing has become a new ‘buzzword’. Teachers have been using it to connect with their pupils. Yoga teachers have been continuing classes online. Online book clubs have sprung up. The technology to see and hear each other has proved invaluable to connect. The Guardian reported the boom in demand for this technology at the start of the coronavirus outbreak https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/mar/31/zoom-booms-as-demand-for-video-conferencing-tech-grows-in-coronavirus-outbreak
In online hypnotherapy and counselling, we have been using Zoom for many years. Either for client online sessions, or online video meetings with colleagues. We have also been doing our hypnotherapy training courses online when we were not allowed to meet face to face.
Try It and See
The technology can take some getting used to. However, with practice, it gets more comfortable as you get used to it. Existing clients that have ‘moved’ to Zoom as we ride this through together, have reported that there is little difference. They found the results just as effective, once they have given it a go.
