Unhelpful thinking styles
We all struggle with our attitude from time to time, and it’s OK to not be OK. When clients come to see me they report various types of negative thinking. Some can’t help but predict worst case scenarios for the future, others ruminate about things that have happened in the past. There are many variations of unhelpful thinking styles. We know when we are being irrational when we get into a tizz or down in the dumps, but we can’t help it. This other article talks about overthinking
Talking therapies can help
It can be very difficult to shake off that negative or anxious mindset, but talking therapies can help them to occur less often. There are a variety of talking therapies available, we offer an integrative approach including counselling, and hypnotherapy.
Solution focused therapy is one style of talking therapy. It helps you to move gradually to a new way of thinking, to help you get to where you want to be. The technique focuses on positives including building on your strengths and resources. It uses gentle open discussion to guide to how you want things to be, and then working toward achieving some of those wonderful goals to move forward.
The therapy process
Working with your therapist you can get the support, encouragement and guidance to start to solve problems and make life better, step by step. A good therapist will never tell you what to do, or dole out advice, but the therapy process can help you to see things from a different perspective. We then have the option of gentle relaxing hypnosis as a tool in addition to the talking therapy that helps with mindset, motivation and visualisation.
After a while, clients start to show progress and it’s wonderful to see people turn their lives around in a relatively short space of time. It’s important to remember that new habits take a while to build and maintain, and that change starts small. Trying to do too much all at once can feel overwhelming, but by taking it step by step and then maintaining, you can achieve real lasting change.
